I’m not the good girl you thought I was.

I was there the night June died. We all were. I saw her body sprawled out in a pool of blood. I saw her too-still chest and I knew she would never breathe again.

Only I wasn’t thinking about her while we hid in the dark, trying not to scream. I was thinking about him. I was thinking about my boyfriend, Jackson.

No, you’ve never met him. And no, he doesn’t exactly have a perfect past. He’s nothing like the squeaky-clean church boys I’ve dated all my life. Maybe that’s what I like about him. Maybe I’m sick of all the pretending.

But that doesn’t make me a murderer.

Yes, I’ve done a lot of things you might think were wrong. I’ve cheated. I’ve lied. I’ve tasted the apple and I’m never going back. This isn’t some sort of come-to-Jesus story.

I’m no good girl. Not anymore. Not ever again.

But I’m not the devil either.

As with any good book, I miss the characters when it's over and I wonder what's going on in their lives... their story isn't over. This book pulled that off for me and that's not easy. The pace was a little erratic at times, but overall it evened out. Although Emma's convictions were fully formed at the beginning of the book, I felt in a large way that her nemesis was actually her struggle with how those convictions changed the lens of how she lived her life, rather than what you would rationalize would be the consuming threat she dances with. But no spoilers! As an avid reader, it was a great value. I'm definitely conscious these days of whether or not I got the value for my money (did I get to check out of my own life for a few hours? yes!) and I definitely did.

Slain eBook Livia Harper Reviews

A good, fast-paced murder mystery with interesting twists. The book is engaging and made me want to go back and read more. I appreciate how the characters' religion and church life is presented in a way that showed the unfortunate reality of some large churches, but did not feel disrespectful of Christianity in general.
many of the characters in this book was likable. This book was well written, and I enjoyed it. there were no doll moments. I would recommend this book to any young adult, who likes a good thriller.
Well written, fast paced page turner. I need more from this author! Great story and I identified with the main character
Livia Harper's style is incredible. This isn't my typical genre, but the author has such a command over, not only language, but also The Human Condition, that I was drawn in and captivated. Characters are presented organically, highlighting their strengths and revealing their weaknesses, in a believable and emotionally accurate manner. Give this book a try. You won't regret it.
An amazing thriller! It hooks you straight from the start and does not let go of you until the last page. Emma's journey is fascinating--in order to prove herself innocent of murder, she finally has to admit that she has emotionally distanced herself from her family's religious teachings. People who have known Emma her entire life now doubt her because of her own doubts. The murder mystery is perfectly done, but it's the emotional backdrop--Emma's struggles between what she's always known and what she now believes, between what others expect of her and what she wants for herself--that makes this book really exceptional.
I loved this book! I enjoy fiction if its well written with good character development, but don't tend to gravitate towards thrillers. Even though it isn't a genre I typically read, the reviews were so good, I gave it a try. So glad I did - I couldn't put it down and Ms. Harper owes me a couple nights of sleep for the times I stayed up late reading it! I have been thinking about the book frequently since finishing it, and (as another commenter mentioned) wondering what Emma is up to. Really looking forward to more from this author.
This new writer does a fantastic job of really dragging you into the story. Transporting me back to to my teen years as an outsider in the church struggling to find myself. And at the same time dragging me a through a mystery that I didn't even remotely see coming.

A definite must read for anyone who spent their teen years growing up in the church.

Can't wait to see what this writer has coming next!
